For the last two years I have been taking still photographs for a personal project entitled ‘It’s Better In The Wind,’ all the while collecting video footage from each ride as we traveled around the Western United States together.

I have been slowly editing the footage into a visual scrapbook of sorts for those who partook, and those who followed us via the web. No preaching the triumphs and failures of the motorcycle industry, no divisive commentary between manufacturers and styles…just a collection of imagery that will hopefully inspire more people to take to the road and discover what there is outside of our respective communities.

Chuck Ragan was kind enough to collaborate with me to write an original soundtrack for the film, to give me some anthemic tunes to edit with, and I can’t thank him enough for the kind gesture towards a fellow traveler.

Please, enjoy the film, everybody who took part in it is family, we are all grateful for your support these past two years while we tried to build a concept around the positive nature of motorcycling.

It pulled three cars which had space for 90 passengers. Its not a accident that the design of the locomotive looks like a cross between the legendary TEE train and the Porsche 356. This locomotive was powered by a VW industrial engine and was the prototype of the VW-Porsche trains.

Volkswagen released its new Transporter vans in 1992, moving the engine to the front and also driving the front wheels. It made a lot of sense in terms of improved crash worthiness and increased internal space - allowing a full-length, low floor.

The Volkswagen Transporter is available as a van (short and long wheel base) and as a crew-cab pickup (ABOVE). A people-mover version, the Volkswagen Caravelle, becomes available in Australia in late 1997.

Volkswagen Transporters can be ordered with the optional Syncro "constant four wheel drive system" which uses a viscous coupling. Volkswagen is sticking to "4WD" terminology rather than the "AWD" alternative. The engine and transmission are transversely mounted in the nose to provide front wheel drive. In the Syncro Transporter, drive is taken off the front differential's crown wheel by a pinion to a propeller shaft. This is in three sections, joined by constant velocity joints, and takes the drive to a rear differential. The viscous coupling is incorporated in the input to the differential. There is no dog-clutch to rigidly lock the viscous coupling.

Rear suspension remains independent by semi-trailing arms on the Syncro, as for the front wheel drive models.

Today's Transporter Syncro is not as capable an offroader as the old rear-engined Syncro which had quite surprising abilities, particularly in the tougher 16"-wheel version. The modern Syncro is more of a slippery-roader than an offroader.

Arguably, the Suzuki GS750 was the first superbike from Japan to get it right. Sure, the CB750 hit the showrooms 7 years earlier and the faster Kawasaki Z900 came into production four years before the Suzuki. But neither of those handled particularly well. The Honda was akin to that of current day middleweight cruisers when it came to power and handling, whereas the Kawasaki had enough motor to totally overpower its chassis, enough so that it could really bite an inexperienced rider.

But not so the Suzuki. For the first time, you could buy a superbike that had a chassis good enough to handle the stock power as well as a bit of engine tuning. At the time, 1976, that was virtually unheard of for a big and fast motorcycle, and it was only fitting that it was brought forward by the last of the Big Four to introduce a four-stroke motorcycle. Because up to that day, Suzuki had made exclusively two-stroke engined motorcycles.

The new inline four had more than a superficial resemblance with the Kawasaki 900. They shared virtually the same cylinder bore, crankshafts, camshafts and the exact same valve sizes; heck, they even shared the very same valve adjustment shims and valve timing! Surprisingly, and disappointingly, the smaller Suzuki engine was 25 mm wider than that of the Z900. As a little consolation, it had a new feature in form of a fully automatic cam chain tensioner, relieving the owner of this typical maintenance task.

Modern riders who take liquid cooling, fuel injection, 4 valve cylinder heads and close to 200 hp per litre for granted may not be impressed by the old Suzuki, which only made half the power from its air cooled DOHC engine. It also sported a lowly two valves per cylinder and was fed by 26 mm slide carburettors. But despite not being particularly modern even by its day, it performed very well compared to the competition.

Suzuki claimed 63 hp for its first four-stroke, which was uncommonly modest for its time. Honda said their 750 made 67 hp back in 1969 and Kawasaki meant their 900 was good for 82 hp in ‘73, but in reality few met the claims made. The Suzuki, on the other hand, typically made around 60 hp at the rear wheel, suggesting somewhere just shy of 70 at the crank. It easily reeled off quarter-mile runs in the twelve’s, half a second quicker than the Honda 750. Really strong runners could reach 200 kph with a prone rider. Power delivery was quite peaky, with most of the muscle resting between 6 and 10,000 rpm, although in typical inline four fashion the engine was highly flexible and would pull from idle in top gear.

The chassis featured a swingarm resting in needle bearings in a time when bronze or plastic bushings were the norm. In addition, the swingarm itself was pretty hefty compared to that of the competition, as was the frame. Wheelbase was substantial at almost 1500 mm, speaking for great stability at high speeds. Rake and trail where more radical to ensure reasonably quick steering despite the long chassis Suspension was supple, yet controlled, and was what set the Suzuki apart from any other big bikes of the era. Up until then you could have a stiffly sprung bike with good handling or a softly sprung bike with comfort, but hardly anything with comfort and handling. And only the Z900 had more cornering clearance in stock form - although it had plenty more.

Cycle magazine described the chassis like this in their original test: “For 99 percent of all riders the GS750 is an awfully good handler, and for 100 percent of all riders it sure has comfortable suspension.” It definitely was the best amalgam of power, handling, comfort and versatility money could buy in 1976.

Although the GS750 only lived for 3 years before being replaced by the GSX750, Suzuki found time to produce it in basically three different disguises; standard, luxury and cruiser. The standard model had wire wheels and a single disc brake up front and another at the back, although it had twin front discs up front at some markets. The luxury model, called GS750E, was mostly the same bike with cast wheels and a slightly stepped seat. It also had three disc brakes of a different design. The cast wheels made it heavier and the increased unsprung weight confused the suspension a bit. The final model was the cruiser, or Low Slinger, called the GS750L. It featured shorter mufflers, a smaller teardrop shaped fuel tank, a heavily stepped seat, cast wheels and a single disc brake at both ends. The mufflers robbed some power and together with the tall, wide and dastardly uncomfortable handlebars this made the bike 15 kph slower in top speed.

One of the finest assets of the GS750 was its amazing reliability. Just like the Z900, the engine was so over-engineered that when Suzuki introduced the GS1000 based on the same design, it had smaller bearings and a lighter, thinner crank and crankcase. In fact, even these crankcases were strong enough to cope with 500 hp or more in supercharged drag racing engines without modification! Later, there were also 850 and 1100 cc versions of basically the same engine, both featuring shaft final drive. There were also shaft drive versions of the 750 and 1000, although the smallest shaftie was for the domestic market only.

So why on earth did Suzuki overbuild their first four-stroke to this degree, knowing that it would cost both money and weight? Because they simply couldn’t afford a failure! Their two-strokes were old-fashioned and had a reputation as slow, yet sturdy workhorses. A few years before the GS750, Suzuki tried to revolutionize the motorcycling world with the RE-5. It featured a wankel engine fitted basically to the GT750 chassis. And it failed miserably. It was complicated, it lacked reliability, it lacked performance, it guzzled fuel and the chassis was passé before it hit the streets. The GS750 was an improvement in every respect over the GT and RE - and it had to be. Suzuki’s survival depended on the GS series, which soon expanded to cover all sizes and categories. Today, the simple and reliable format continues in the GS500 twin, a no frills bike for those seeking cheap and reliable transport.

In some ways it was the Gixxer of its day, a state-of-the-art motorcycle, but it wouldn’t make sense to compare the two for anything but to see how far the world has moved over the past 30 years, because the GS was intended to be much more versatile than the Gixxer ever was. Actually, the bikes dating that far back cannot easily be compared to anything made today. Sure, there are retro bikes like the CB750 that feature semi-modern technology while trying to look like the old bikes, but nobody could call this genre state-of-the-art any more.

But if we just for fun compare the GS to the most extreme motorcycle of today in the same class, the GSX-R750, it will give you an idea of what sort of gains that have been made and how lucky current riders are to live in a time when you can buy track-worthy technology right off the floor at a very friendly price. Over the years, weight has dropped from 253 to 195 kg with fuel, the number of valves have doubled to 16, liquid cooling have replaced cooling fins, advanced digital injection has replaced a quartet of carburettors, claimed power has increased from 63 @ 8800 to 150 @ 12800, top speed has increased from 195 to 275 kph and acceleration from 0-100 kph has dropped from 4.5 to 3.0 seconds.

Of course, these hard facts only tell part of the story. When it comes to handling and brakes, the improvements are at least as big, and a good rider on a current motorcycle can ride faster and still remain safer than the riders of three decades ago. When it comes to comfort and touring abilities, however, the old style may be preferred by many even today, particularly those forced to ride pillion. The flat seat makes it easy to move around and both rider and pillion are seated on the same plane and can stay close together in a natural way.

The closest modern soul-mate to the old GS is probably not a Suzuki at all, but the Z750 from Kawasaki. This is kind of funny, because its closest competitor back in 1976 was another Kawasaki, the Z650, and not the other 750s. The Kawasaki had a smaller engine, but it was also lighter and a decent handler in its own right. Although the 650 engine was rated at one hp above the GS750, the reality was that the Suzuki made more power. However, the Kawasaki pulled nicely in the midrange and didn’t require as much shifting of gears to go briskly, also helped by shorter gearing and the already mentioned lesser weight.

The current Z750 is of course a much stronger performer than the old GS, but it has retained the same basic idea; a straightforward motorcycle to be used as a platform to build a machine to your own ideas. Just as the old Suzuki, the new Kawasaki can be upgraded to have a go at the track or it can be fitted with a better seat and saddlebags and be made into a sports tourer. Left stock, both the Z and GS can/could be used to go scratching back roads on Sundays, commute with ease on workdays and hit the open road on holidays with a bit of soft luggage to carry required belongings

Eurasian kingfisher is a vibrant bird, both in looks and behavior. A stab of electric blue contrasted with the warm chestnut orange of the under parts, is the usual image that it presents. And then it is gone, leaving behind the impression of a living cobalt and azure jewel.
Kingfishers are small-to-large, monogamous. More-or-less solitary, bright-plumaged birds of forests, savannas and waterside situations. The great majority of species are tropical, but one or two species from each subfamily have extended as migrant breeders into temperate latitudes.
Primitive species are forest-dwelling predators feeding mainly on forest-floor insects ;more specialized types plunge into shallow water for small animals, fly catch for air-borne insects, forage in leaf-litter for earth-worms, prey on birds and reptiles, and deep-dive for fish from a perch or (particularly the Pied kingfisher) from hovering flight.
Like other birds of their order, kingfishers are large-headed, short-necked, stout-bodied and short-legged, with weak, fleshy feet having the second and third toes partly joined. The bill is straight, strong and long, flattened from top to bottom in insectivorous species and from side to side in fish-eating species. The extraordinary Shovel-billed or Earthworm-eating kingfisher has a short, wide, conical bill. Other forms have the bill sharp-pointed and dagger-like. But in the adult African dwarf kingfisher it is blunt-tipped (sharp in the juvenile). For no obvious reason, several not-closely related lineages of kingfishers are three-toed, having lost the fourth toe. Plumage and other characters show that three-toed species are very closely allied with some four-toed species in the genera Ceyx and Alcedo, and thatthe three-toed kingfishers do not comprise single natural assemblage as they were formerly held to do. Although colorful, the colors are in general muted, with shades of blue and red predominating. Shoulders and rump are usually shining azure blue, and dark cap and back are commonly separated by a white or pale collar. Juveniles of paradise kingfishers are dusky, differing markedly from their adults, but in other species juveniles are bright in plumage, though duller than adults. There is little geographic variation within a species, and color conservatism has led to allied species looking much alike. Notable exceptions are the Variable dwarf kingfisher, whose subspecies on Islands from the Philippines to the Solomon vary from red to blue or yellow, Africa’s Gray-headed kingfisher and the much larger Black-capped kingfisher of China. Although the last two differ in appearance, biochemist-cal and biological characteristics, as well as the geographical relationship of their ranges, suggest very strongly that they are of immediate descent from a common ancestor.
The evolutionary history of other groups of kingfisher species is better understood than for most groups of birds. The family almost certainly arose in tropical rain forest, partly in the northern Australasian region (insectivorous woodland kingfishers, sub-family llaceloninae), and partly in adjacent Indonesia, Borneo and Southeast Asia (forest insectivores, evolving into waterside fishers, subfamily Alcedininae). Both sub-families extended into Asia and repeatedly invaded Africa, on as many as 12 separate occasions ; the Alcedininae invaded the New World to give rise to the Green and Giant kingfishers there (exclusive fishers, sub-family Beryline). The several Pacific archipelago species of woodland (Halcyon) kingfishers have clearly evolved from the wide-ranging complex formed by the Mangrove and Beach kingfishers and the more southerly sacred kingfisher. African mangrove, Woodland and Blue-breasted kingfishers are similarly of recent descent from a single ancestor; their habitats keep them apart, though they are acquiring sufficient ecological differences to permit some degree of geographical overlap. Belted, Ringed. Giant and Crested kingfishers respectively in North America, tropical America, Africa, and southern Asia, are all very closely allied and it is thought that the Giant and Crested descended from small populations of the first two which crossed
The Atlantic (Belted kingfishers occasionally still arrive in Europe as vagrants). Species multiplication is also demonstrated by the four green kingfishers of the neotropics.Long ago, their common ancestor there separated into two geographically distinct populations which duly happened to evolve differences of size, enabling them to overlaps distinct species. Later, each of the two species repeated the separating process, and the result today is four species all occupying much the same range, having body-weights close to the proportions 1:2 :4:8, with the smallest and second-largest (American Pygmy and Green-and-refocus kingfishers)being almost alike in appearance and the largest and second-smallest (Amazon and Green kingfishers) also being remarkably similar.
All fishing kingfishers take a certain amount of invertebrate prey in addition to fish; Eurasian kingfishers, for instance, have about 21 percent of insects in their diet, mainly aquatic but some caught on dry land. Pied kingfishers, fishing from hovering flight more than from a perch, are in that sense at the pinnacle of evolution of the family ; in Africa they live entirely upon fish(hut in India take insects and crabs too, and can even “hawk” for flying termites). Not having to rely on a perch means that they can fish far from shore: on Lake Karina they fish up to 3km (.9mi) offshore at dawn and dusk, catching sardines, a deep-sea fish which rises to the surface at those times. In Natal, 8o percent of their fish food consists of Sarotherodon mossambicus, mainly in ther-2g (o.o35—o7oz) weight class, and on Lake Victoria they prey almost exclusivelyon fish from the general Haplochrornis andLngraulicypris. When they forage close tithe shore, they dive from hovering flight in windy conditions when ruffled water seems to make fishing from a perch unrewarding. Only when the surface is calm do they fish from perches to a greater extent than from hovering. A Pied kingfisher flies low over the water to a desired hunting station, then rises up to Tom (33ft) and hovers on rapidly heating wings with the trunk held almost vertically and the bill pointing acutely down, keeping station for5— o seconds, then diving steeply to penetrate possibly 2/11 (6.5ft) underwater, occasionally catching more than one fish ate time. Similar behavior is exhibited by the belted kingfisher of North America.
Most kingfishers are monogamous and territorial, a pair defending an area of wood-land on a stretch of river against incursion by other birds of the same species. Several species are migratory, both in the temperate zone and within the tropics; others are sedentary. What little is known suggests that most species breed at the end of their first year, and are quite long-lived. Wood-land kingfishers (Halcyon species) have a territorial advertising display, singing loudly and repeatedly from a conspicuous treetop perch, spreading the wings widely, with the patterned undersides facing forwards, and rotating the body about the vertical axis. Other species have little by way of any court-ship display. Both sexes dig the nest tunnel and the male takes a minor role in incubi-hon. The eggs hatch at about daily intervals, in the sequence of laying, so nestlings vary considerably in size. They are fed by both parents equally.
Laughing kookaburras in Australia and Pied kingfishers in Africa have a more com-plea social system than solitary monogamy. Each has adult helpers at the nest, and in Pied kingfishers there are two kinds of helpers: primary helpers (those helping their own parents) and secondary helpers (those helping an unrelated pair). “Helping “includes defense of territory and feeding the young in the nest and after fledging. This species breeds in loose colonies, the only kingfisher to do so.
Kingfishers have not, in general, come into direct conflict with man. As fish-caters few species have occasionally been viewed as pests on fishing streams and dealt with accordingly; but usually they are treated with respect—and often with admiration. Formerly, great numbers of Eurasian king-fishers were shot or netted to make fishing “flies” from their feathers, and in earlier times (in Britain at least) superstition caused the destruction of many, for a dried king-fisher corpse in the house was supposed to avert thunderstorms and keep out moths! Today, man’s harmful effects upon king-fishers are more accidental than deliberate, in the pollution of fresh waters and the modification of habitats, especially rainforest. Bird-catchers destroy many; atfatinga in Assam great numbers of migrating Eurasian, Stork-billed, Ruddy, and Oriental dwarf kingfishers are killed (and presumably eaten) when they are attracted to light beacons around the village at night. In some Mediterranean countries, many kingfishers are killed by netting, shooting and liming, although they are not target species.
Few populations are at great risk. So many species are confined to tropical rainforests, however, or to small Pacific islands or archipelagos, that their fate depends entirely on the preservation of their habit-tats. Almost certainly extinct is the distinctive race of the Tuamotu kingfisher. Which lived until about 1922 on the island ofMangareva, 1,250km (about 800mil fromTuamotu in the central Pacific.

I also , most often work on larger pieces that require a lot of time to be completed ! But also , more importantly , because the main focus of my work is on the quality rather than the quantity , I have a limited amount of openings for pieces ! I've tried to do my best to accommodate everyone but the demand in the last few years has been a bit overwhelming ! I've therefore had to narrow down and carefully choose the pieces I accept in order to do my best possible work on these pieces but also just to stay mentally healthy !

So from now on , I've decided to cary a waiting list to simplify and organize my system ! Here are the new rules on how to apply for the waiting list , with your submission ! Thank you for being patient and understanding !

Every single E-mail will be answered (might take up to a week) with a confirmation of whether or not I have accepted your submission and your name is now on the waiting list or not ! Don't be offended if I choose not to take on your submission because it doesn't fit the kind of work I do , because it doesn't fit the schedule you ask for or just because I am overworked ! This is a one man operation and like I said earlier , it is obsessed with quality not quantity ! If , however you do make it on the waiting list , then as soon as an opening is possible I will E-mail you back with dates to start !

Waiting list Europe (Copenhagen) is closed ! It's approx. 3 years long already and that's just way too long to wait ! I'm thinking of opening it again in a few years when this list gets much thinner !

All work is free hand and all art work for your piece will be done directly on you , on the first appointment !

THE STOVE INDUSTRY IN 1892

In 1892, to celebrate its 20^th anniversary, the National Association of Stove Manufacturers made an effort to identify all stove manufacturers in the United States, including all of its non-members and the many new firms, some of them located in areas quite remote from the industry’s old centers.

What it discovered was a very considerable turnover within the industry. 128 of 1874’s 221 firms, which had contributed 118,000 tons (46.4 percent) of production capacity at that time, had disappeared. But this was in the context of an industry that was still growing, in output and in number of active firms, as well as experiencing a great deal of spatial reorganization – away from some of the towns and states which had once dominated it; towards the South and [Mid] West, and within those regions towards newly-industrializing small cities with low production costs.

The following table summarizes the changes of 18 years. Unfortunately, there is no production data comparable to 1874’s, so all we can do is a crude count of stove firms, large and small. Almost all were still single-plant, proprietary enterprises, however; so we are looking at where the industry was actually located, rather than just at where its constituent firms were legally domiciled. For each state, one can see (a) how many firms present in 1874 had disappeared over the years, (b) how many continued in existence, and (c) how many were new foundations.

The big changes are plain enough: Pennsylvania and Illinois, centers of the nation’s iron and steel industry, had made the largest absolute gains in numbers of stove firms; in terms of their share of the national industry, the greatest net gains had again been made by Illinois, followed by Alabama, Maryland, and Tennessee. The industry was following its markets, towards the American rural heartland where consumers still had no practicable alternative to solid fuel for cooking and heating (with the partial exception of the kerosene cook-stove). It was also locating closer to its raw material sources, which were now overwhelmingly American, the earlier New England, Mid-Atlantic and even Midwestern industry’s dependence on imported Scotch Pig (iron) having ended. A tidewater location was no longer of any advantage. Transport costs for raw materials and end products argued strongly in favour of relocation towards the interior and the South – a region acquiring the stove habit a generation after the rest of the United States, and also well endowed with the finest cheap foundry pig iron in the country, and its cheapest labor supply.

Why an Atlantic?

The cook stove is a family institution. It holds a unique place in modern horne life. The entire household is dependent upon it and is vitally concerned in its wise selection. What makes the difference in ranges? One stove gives a consistent and faithful daily performance, another equally attractive on the outside, fails to satisfy.

What are the basic factors that together produce a good stove?

First of all, is there a reputable manufacturer back of it ? Are the castings satin-smooth and tightly fitted? Is it of simple design-free from over-ornamentation - easily taken care of? Is it economical of fuel? Is it designed for the greatest convenience of the cook? Does the heat of the oven respond quickly to the adjustment of the drafts? Can replacement parts for the fire box be obtained readily and economically in years to come? Can attachments, such as shelves, gas and warming ovens, coils for heating water, ash chutes, etc., be added at any time?

These are just a few of the questions that this company has encountered in over half a century of concentration upon the problem of producing good ranges. We made our first stove in 1877. We have been making them better and in a constantly increasing variety of useful combinations ever since. All have been improved in design and in substitution of smooth rounded surfaces for excessive ornament that formerIy added so much labor for cleaning.

The illustrations show the various ranges exactly as they look, and also give by comparison, some idea of their relative size. More detailed circulars of any range will be forwarded upon application.
